The Bermuda Health Council Invites Stakeholders to Take Part in Dementia Survey and Focus Groups

(Hamilton, Bermuda) – The Bermuda Health Council announces the launch of a comprehensive initiative aimed at supporting the enhancement of healthcare services for dementia patients. This initiative, which is part of the Health Council’s ongoing commitment to advancing population health, seeks input from caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals to shape care solutions for the future.

“Our goal is to gather meaningful insights from those directly impacted by dementia, ensuring we address the real challenges faced by caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals,” said a spokesperson for the Health Council. “Through participation in these surveys and focus groups, the community will play an active role in shaping more effective dementia care services in Bermuda.”

Over the next two months, the Health Council will conduct a series of surveys, and host focus groups, to gather feedback on the key areas affecting health system quality, specifically in dementia care. These efforts are designed to ensure that healthcare decisions reflect the lived experiences of those who rely on the system daily.

Upcoming Activities

Mind Matters: Navigating Dementia

In collaboration with Ageing and Disability Services (ADS), NorthStar and Dementia Bermuda, the Health Council will roll out a Dementia Perceptions Survey, designed to assess public awareness and understanding of dementia. This survey will measure knowledge of symptoms, attitudes toward research and clinical trials, and perceptions of available community support; may help to identify gaps in local dementia resources; and will inform efforts to improve diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care across the island. The survey will be available online or by phone from 9th October 2024 to 3rd November 2024. To participate, visit healthcouncil.bm/engage or call 292-6420, Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Dementia – Quality of Life Survey, in partnership with ADS, NorthStar and Dementia Bermuda, will be launched on 28th October 2024, running until 30th November 2024. This survey, which utilizes the EQ-5D-5L tool, will measure the impact of dementia on patients’ daily lives. Family members, caregivers and health professionals are encouraged to complete the survey on behalf of patients.

In addition to the surveys, the Health Council, ADS, NorthStar and Dementia Bermuda, will host a series of focus groups to gather deeper insights into the personal experiences of caregivers, family members, and healthcare professionals. These sessions will provide an opportunity to discuss dementia-related challenges, such as misconceptions, financial and support-related concerns, and the overall impact on daily life.

Focus Group Schedule:

  • Caregivers: Tuesday, 5th November
  • Health Professionals: Wednesday, 6th November
  • Family Members of Patients with Dementia: Thursday, 7th November

All sessions will be held at Sterling House, 16 Wesley Street in Hamilton at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., each lasting approximately one hour. Light refreshments will be provided.

“At the Health Council, we are committed to moving beyond the desk and actively engaging with the people who navigate Bermuda’s healthcare system daily. This approach ensures that our recommendations and policies are grounded in real-world experiences and community voices, leading to more tailored and effective healthcare solutions for everyone in Bermuda. We believe that genuine community engagement will lead to sustainable changes that are more responsive to the needs of those we serve.”
